waterless toilets

Organisers of One Day On Earth found this blog and contacted me to participate in their project. They are asking individuals and organisations to film the human experience in every country in the world over a 24 hour period on 10/10/10 to present a global view of the community of this earth.

They contacted me ages ago and I thought, yeah, great and promptly put it on the back burner until I had time to deal with it – namely TODAY!

I’m ashamed because I should have been promoting this more, so this is my last minute attempt to begin to spread the word about this amazing project and maybe even get some of you hooked on becoming part of it… I know it’s a bit last minute, but hey, that’s all part of what life’s like here in Monte so…

Here’s some video’s explaining more about this exciting global collaboration:

Tonight we began to form a plan of what to film. It will likely revolve around water, the use & abuse of it in this supposed “eco state” of Montenegro and the wonderful ways we reduce, reuse and recycle this precious resource at our Eco Camp.

Mainly due to a defunct sprinkler system (probably partly due to ridiculously high water pressure) water was haemorrhaging from our pipes at our house above Herceg Novi for 5 days non-stop. Our water bill for last month was nearly 100 euros!!! (Our total bills – power, water, ADSL & phone – for the month are normally around 85 euros combined in total!). The hideous truth is that last month in this house we used more than twice as much water than we have used on the campsite in the past 4 months – we have a 45,000 litre water tank on the site which was filled in June and is still not empty… you do the math.

Currently I am the only individual representing this beautiful country – get involved if you can…

This week saw huge progress as we got stuck into the carpentry projects.  Here’s Nik fitting the frames for the compost loo hatches and then the finished hatches…

The finished hatches!

Of course, wood work is a great excuse for playing with toys!!!  Here’s a chop saw and sander in action…

But it’s not just the boys who get to play – here I am with the big hammer action drill, drilling holes for the toilet door frames:

Den & drill

The compost toilets nearly finished – just a few key bits to do… fitting the fans into the stench pipes and the solar panel that will drive the fans onto the roof.. oh and the tiling and cementing in…  Still, we’re a step closer and the doors are beautiful!

Inside View

The rough build on the internal walls is now complete and we can really see the space taking shape.  Here are the toilets (you can see the holes in the floors that the special pedestals will fit over)…

The space that will be 3 compost loos!

Here are the shower cubicles (oh, my!  What a lot of tiling we have to do!!) …

Here’s the half wall that the waterless urinals will sit behind (er, more tiling – ouch!) …

Since these shots were taken the walls and floors look a bit different as the plumber has started drilling out the channels for all the pipe work and drains.  Once Zivko’s finished with all the first fix plumbing, Steve will start tacking on the cable for the lights and sockets (he is currently drawing pretty pictures in preparation for this) and then we can get the inside walls rendered ready for tiling (damn – that nasty ‘t’ word again…).

Shaping up…

Today was another glorious day and the builders had already been hard at work for hours by the time we arrived at 10.00am.  This is the welcome sight that greeted us when we first arrived…

Shuttering up the foundation walls

These are the just the walls of the foundation!  Where you see the top of the wooden poles sticking up, just above that will be ground level.  The foundations have to be so deep to accommodate the compost chambers for our water saving loos and as a result we will get a bonus storage room underneath on the opposite side to the compost toilets.  This is where we are planning to put the generator to minimise noise pollution.  This was the view at the end of the day…

Shuttering the foundation walls #2

Here, you get a good view of the privacy barrier that we have been working on although it looks much more attractive from the other side which is covered with palms!  We are cracking on with extending the fence posts all the way along the boundary and then have the mammoth job of covering both sides of the fence with palms.  So far we’ve put up about 250 palms and we need about another 750!
